This Week: Long Creek Youth Development - Catie Currie and Lynne Allen
We have two guest speakers this week, providing us with updates and insights into the Long Creek Youth Development Center. We have a strong relationship with the LCY, as many  Rotarians in our club volunteer in various capacities.

Catherine Curry is the school administrator for the Arthur R. Gould School at LCY. She graduated from a local Maine high school before earning a BA in History with a minor in Education and Educational Studies at Haverford College. At the University of Pennsylvania she obtained an MS in Secondary Education, Social Studies, while also working at a Philadelphia public school. Returning to Maine, she taught five years at York High School, gravitating towards students who struggled in typical school settings. She pursued a Masters in Education Policy from Teachers College at Columbia University, and returned to Maine with the Dept. of Corrections as the transition specialist for LCY.  In October of 2021 she was hired as the Gould School administrator. Her focus is on creating a trauma responsive school that meets students where they are while preparing them to transition back to community-based education.

The Arthur R Gould school is a public school inside LCY, serving students connected to the Department of Corrections, and to ensure seamless transitions between community and facility-based education. AR Gould offers four educational pathways, HiSet (alternative diploma, a traditional high school diploma, college opportunities, and career education.

Lynne Allen joined the Maine DOC as Superintendent of LCY on January 31, 2022. Prior she worked 14 years within the Mass Dept. of Youth Services, finishing in a senior leadership position as the Dir. Residential Services for the Northeast Region. Lynne’s experience in juvenile services is extensive, including Facility Administrator of the Judge Connelly Youth Center, and Director Assessment Services  Metro Region.

Lynne’s experience in Massachusetts is notable for the opportunities she helped create for Mass DYS youth. This included collaborations with local colleges, with a mock trial program partnership with the NE School of Law, and an on-campus classroom experience with Brandeis University. She collaborated with an award-winning radio station to bring podcast training to youth at the Connelly facility, and sourced multiple music and theater-based opportunities for youth. Lynne was  instrumental in bridging the gap between law enforcement and justice-involved youth by bringing police academy recruits from across the commonwealth into JCYC to engage in meaningful conversations. She holds Masters Degrees in both Mental Health Counseling and Criminal Justice.
Last Week's Social and Trivia Event!
We had 16 attendees at our Thursday 8/11 Night Social, featuring Trivia King Mike Fortunato, who was not kidding when he announced the topics.  The Bronx, NY Yankees, Boston Red Sox, American History, Hollywood and The Beatles. We divided into three teams, and braced for questions that took a deep dive. Results were tabulated by the Pricewaterhouse team of David and Pat Putnam. In the end, it was a runaway win for the BBCT's:  Bruce Jones, Brian Nickerson, Charlie Frair, and Tom Talbott, who seemed to have a man for every category, sweeping 5 of the 6 topics. For their trivial pursuits they each earned a Rotary hat and a box of Tic Tacs. Fun time for all!
