Quincy Hentzel, CEO Portland Chamber of Commerce

Quincy Hentzel currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce, which is a business membership organization that represents the City of Portland, Maine, the 7 surrounding communities and 1,300 members. In her role, Quincy has worked to advance the Greater Portland Region and find opportunities to grow our workforce and to build and sustain a vibrant business environment.

Prior to her time at the Chamber, she served in the role of Director of Governmental Affairs for the Maine Credit Union League – a trade association representing all credit unions in the state. Though born and raised in the Midwest, she has made Maine her home.

Last Week's Speaker: Matthew Arrants- Maine's Vacation/Hospitality Forecast | by Bruce Moore

We welcomed Matthew Arrants, ISHC, CHAM, Founder and Principal of the Arrants Company, a hotel investment and advisory firm.

Matt explained he started out like most people in the hospitality business at the bottom washing dishes at a country club. He ended up at Pinnacle Advisory Group, which develops hotels for colleges and universities and boutique hotels. He is currently the President of the Hotel Asset Managers Association (HAMA).

The primary focus of his presentation was the state of the hospitality industry both in the nation and in local markets. He reported hotel occupancy increased from only 50 percent in 2020 due to the pandemic to fully rebounded in 2022 to prior pandemic levels. Maine was one of the first places to recover because it is a great leisure destination and it was discovered during the pandemic. Maine has a reputation for being an outdoor and experiential destination. In addition,  Portland is an attractive place to eat and drink as well as go for a boat ride, hike or many other outdoor activities. He said demand has been strong all along the coast of Maine.

The one downside has been “labor, labor, labor”. Hotels have scaled back to maybe only one restaurant instead of two or three and you may not have your room cleaned every day.  He said hotel operators are optimistic about the future and the long term business prognosticators are less optimistic.
Bits and Pieces | by Laura Young
President Bruce opened the meeting on 2/3/23 by noting how grateful we were to be in the heat with the temperatures in the teens outside and getting colder by the minute.
Bowen Depke stood in for Zach Zimmerman by leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance

For the invocation Larry Gross, days away from leaving for a month in New Zealand, repeated the following words from Ralph Waldo Emerson:
“For each new morning with its light,
For rest and shelter of the night,
For health and food, for love and friends,
For everything Thy goodness sends.”

Zach Zimmerman led the raffle with a pretty full deck, but Roger Fagan beat the odds and pulled the Queen of Hearts earning a cool $330!

Amy Chipman announced that we donated the $4789 from the Clynk bags to the Keep Maine Warm Fund. President Bruce thanked Amy for her efforts connecting us to WCSH Channel 6, through her son Sam, which led to a nice mention of Portland Rotary’s donation on air on Saturday morning. Bruce showed a clip of that segment to the members.

Justin Lamontagne introduced our guest speaker.

Items Needed at Milestone Recovery:
Bruce Moore, chair of our Opioid Task Force has brought to our attention that the items most needed at Milestone Recovery (65 India Street, Portland)  to help the homeless and those in recovery include men’s winter coats, long underwear, hats and gloves, and cold-weather sleeping bags and tents. Please check your closets and basements to see if you have any of these items you no longer need.

Please bring any items you wish to donate to our Rotary meeting this Friday, the 10th or our Social on the 16th or call Bruce Moore at 207 318-9424 if you have anything you’d like to have picked up.  We want to get the items to Milestone as soon as possible so they can help protect folks against winter weather.  Thanks for your help with this project!
