This Friday, Meeting at Maine Mall
Friday, Sept 9th, Portland Rotary will meet out at the Maine Mall Food Court at 12 NOON. We will have a designated area for seating, and you can order and take-out from any of the fine Mall eateries.  At 12:30pm, we will walk down to the Center Court Rotunda and participate in a ceremony to honor our heroes. Please invite family, friends, and if able, your hero, so everyone can experience the moment and see the positive influence both our heroes and Rotarians have on our community.
Flags For Heroes Sets Up At Maine Mall| by Tom Talbott
The stage is set for Friday's meeting at the Mall.

In the Mall's Center Court Rotunda, 100 American flags now stand proudly, representing 106 honored heroes. The difference in numbers is because some flags were dedicated to two heroes.

67 flags were sponsored by members of Portland Rotary, and 35 from individuals outside the club. We are appreciative of every participant and those being honored, their stories and relationships. Some honorees were mentors and teachers, others were downright life savers. Some are still with us, some have passed away. There is a meaningful story behind every flag.

Set-up took approximately 90 minutes on this past Tuesday evening, with many helping hands on deck. On the scene were Charlie Frair, Bruce Moore and Jan Chapman, Dick Hall, Bruce Jones, Roxane Cole, Paul Tully, Patty Byers, Cyrus Hagge, Mike Fortunato, Amy Chipman, Brian Nickerson, Jerry Angier, Jake Bourdeau, Nick Gagnon, Larry Gross, and Tom Talbott. During the set-up, Tom coordinated with his video partner, Reg Groff, for an upcoming video presentation of the event, to be used for future promotion of our annual program. Photos by Tom T!

Ocean Clean Up Project -  Friday September 16th, 9am
Ellen Niewoehner and our Environmental Committee needs your help for a morning of ocean-side cleanup down on the Portland Waterfront. The exact location will be announced shortly, but please mark the date.  Remember, we're having our club social meeting the night before, no meeting on that Friday -  so join in for some more fellowship and good will with our clean-up team. Tools will be supplied. More info? Reach out to Ellen!  Jeff Tarling, Portland City Arborist, said that he would have members of his team on site at the East End Beach to assist.  That sounds like a clue where we'll be needed!
Backpack Project Donations Deadline Approaching
We're in the final countdown for the Backpack Project to help people in recovery from substance use disorder!  Many thanks to all who have already donated!  We're well on our way to reaching our goals.  There is still a need for additional items for the backpacks.  If you can help us with these, please go to Sign Up Genius.

Financial donations are also welcome for Hannaford  gift cards and bus passes.  You may either bring a check to a Rotary meeting or donate online on our Rotary webpage.  The deadline for donations is Friday, September 16th.
All are welcome to join us for filling the backpacks at 9am on Saturday, September 24th at Portland Recovery Community Center, 102 Bishop Street, Portland.
For questions, please contact Jan Chapman (207 408-5802) or Bruce Moore (207 318-9424).
