Last Week's Program: Meet The New Members!
|by Erik Jorgensen

Laura Green Rothermel & Hannah Merrill were the masters of ceremony at a special program on Friday created by and featuring our recent new members. Laura organized the program like a baseball game.

Marnie Morrione led off. Familiar to many as the former chairperson of the Portland Board of Public Education, Marnie’s Rotary roots are deep: her grandfather was a Rotarian from Greenville, NC, and in high school she was a Rotary exchange student in in Brazil. This started her on a lifelong interest in travel and international work: after stints in the Peace Corps and a decade as a US Department of Commerce trade specialist, she currently runs a travel consultancy specializing in personalized trips and tours in Italy.

Next up was Sue Young. Sue reported that she’s the oldest in a giant French Canadian Catholic family, that she skied every mountain in Maine and then during college every mountain in Vermont, before marrying a “a Jewish non-skier” who is none other than Portland Rotarian Jon Young. She likes to practice yoga to calm her “cheerleader-style personality” and reports that she’s loved every job she’s ever had, in the fields of teaching counseling and mentoring. You may also have read her newspaper columns!

Batting third was Bill Milliken. Born in Elmira NY, Bill is the son of a newspaper editor and a math teacher who eventually landed in Maine in time for Bill to graduate from Cony High in Augusta. After a stint in the US Army, Bill went on to USM and Maine Law. He started off in criminal defense, but found himself drawn to retail, ultimately owning three liquor stores and a coffee shop. After selling the stores, he worked as a legislative bill drafter before getting into the business of art – as an auctioneer, art service specialist and gallery owner as well as the executive director of the Saint Lawrence Church restoration. That business brought this program full circle, as he currently works with this program’s emcees, Laura Green Rothermel and Hannah Merrill.

Hannah, who is not a Rotarian but really ought to be one someday, introduced Laura Green Rothermel, who closed out the inning with a grand slam. Laura is an artist, designer, and entrepreneur with a background in writing, who now serves as one of the founders of Necesse Est, a design gallery and store located on Exchange Street. The storefront, opening this summer, will sell art and design elements, while also hosting and holding master classes in design, fine art finishing, sculpture and architectural elements. The company will also sell specialized preservation products, including one that arrests the deterioration of brownstone.

It was exciting to get to know this talented group of new members. Welcome to all of you, and thanks for providing this program!  Photo: Sue, Laura, and Hannah.
