This Week's Speaker: Kirk Duffy, Introducing Savannah
Kirk is a native of Greenwich Connecticut. After graduating from Amherst College and NYU Graduate School of Business, he and his father eventually purchased an industrial distribution business in Savannah Georgia, where he has lived since 1982. Upon the sale of the business in 2008, Kirk and his wife purchased a second home in Portland. Kirk had been previously acquainted with Maine on account of (1) numerous summer vacations,(2) a sister who has lived in Portland for 40+ years, and (3) servicing Maine-based companies on behalf of the Touche Ross accounting firm, for which he worked for 5 years out of their Manhattan office. Accordingly, unlike most seasonal visitors, he is well acquainted with Maine winters!
Kirk is a Rotarian who has regularly visited with Portland Rotary for many years. Additionally, Kirk is active in jail and prison ministry. Originally ordained a deacon in the Episcopal Church, Kirk now serves in an identical role in the Anglican Church of North America. He has served on various ministry teams in both Georgia and at the Cumberland County Jail and Maine State Prison in Maine.
IT TOOK SOME TOILING, BUT THE POT IS BOILING!
At our meeting on the 25th, President Patty gave a brief Lobster raffle update. At that point we had raised over$11,000 from the raffle, and as of yesterday, Tuesday the 29th, we have completed our sales program. Join our Friday meeting to hear the final tally!
Next up - The BIG DRAWING for the Grand Prize of 8 Maine Lobsters shipped to our winner anywhere in the U.S. courtesy of Luke's Lobster.
There will be plenty more news as well as accolades for some tremendous efforts by many club members who had this event so well organized, as well as all those who worked the waterfront. This event notably worked to raise money from outside the club, and by every measure was a success!

More than 30 members and guests gathered for last Friday’s meeting . Patty Byers rang us in and called upon Bill Milliken to lead the Pledge of Allegiance. Tom Talbott, pinch hitting for Charlie Frair, delivered an autumn Thought for the Day. Channeling his rock and roll roots, Tom brought us an a cappella verse of the Led Zeppelin song “Ramble On’: “Leaves are falling all around, it’s time I was on my way. Thanks to you I’m much obliged, for such a pleasant stay”.
LEWISTON STRONG: Patty called for a moment of silence to honor the memory of those who lost their lives or were injured during the mass shooting in Lewiston 1 year ago.
WELCOME: Gervin Kah introduced five visiting Rotarians or guests. Paul Gore led the raffle, but Roger Fagan found only the Jack of spades, so the $290 pots lives for another week. Nannette Ranger-Duncanson, Bruce Moore, Erik Greven, Bowen Depke, Larry Gross and Dave Ertz, all shared “happy” occasions with the Club.
NOMINATED HALL: Patty Byers introduced a motion to nominate Dick Hall to serve on the District Finance Committee for a 3 year term. Details and sign up sheets will be out soon. Friends and Family are invited to join in the very well received community service event.
SPEAKERS WANTED: Bowen Depke asked Club members who know interesting people or people with interesting jobs to contact him with recommendations for future program presenters.
MULTI-TASKING: Wearing many hats, Jan Chapman made a number of announcements. She reported that the Club has identified the next two host families for Antonio, our in-bound Exchange Student enrolled at Deering High School. Jan also reported that our outbound Exchange Student, Mia Newell, has settled in nicely after being welcomed by all four of her host families when she arrived at the airport in Japan. Continuing with announcements, Jan reported that our Recovery Task Force received a $4,000 District Grant to introduce Restorative Yoga classes for residents of recovery houses. The first classes will start in November in partnership with Sea Change Yoga. Finally, Jan reported that 75 back packs were prepared at the Portland Recovery Center for people moving into area recovery houses.
BRIDGE WALK RECAP: Gervin Kah returned to the mic to report on another successful Casco Bay Bridge Walk and Pints for Polio event at Broadway Bowl on October 17th. More than 50 Rotarians and family members from Portland and other Clubs participated in the highly visible event. Gervin gave a special shout out to Paul Gore for making us all look so good in red End Polio Now clothing. (Many photos last week!)
NOW HEAR THIS: Roger Fagan introduced a newly branded box for collecting used hearing aids for our project in the Dominican Republic. He is looking for Club volunteers to help him distribute the collection boxes at local hearing aid provider sites.
PROM COVERUP: In partnership with Portland Parks and Recreation, one of the main projects of the Environmental Stewardship Committee is to remove and replace invasive species on the Eastern Prom. Their first work event was October 24 - covering the area around the tennis courts with tarps. Thanks to organizer Bill Milliken and the four volunteers that joined him: Dwayne Black, Laura Rothermel, Brian Nickerson, and Dick Hall.
LAST WEEK'S SPEAKER | Cary Tyson Portland Downtown Sings the "P"s. | By Tom Nickerson
Introduced by Dave Putnam, the membership heard from Cary Tyson, Executive Director of Portland Downtown. Cary has been with the organization for more than 5 years. Portland Downtown is a non-profit organization with a mission to stimulate a vibrant, thriving and sustainable downtown community. The organization represents the retail business, cultural groups, and restaurants in the downtown area and works to promote those businesses year-round with a number of initiatives and events.
As Cary started his presentation, he pointed out that most of his work is dealing with Parking, Pot, Poop, and Pee as those are the top issues his members want him to focus on. The friendlier and more inviting he can help make the downtown, the more people will visit. As part of the organization’s strategy to support the businesses, the group partners closely with the police and the public works departments to coordinate a response on these issues. Portland Downtown hosts a police cadet program in the summer to help expand the police presence and to de-escalate any issues; as well as supports 6 public works positions to keep the area clean. The top areas the group is working on is providing public restrooms (you may have noticed the new one near the art museum), hiring groups to clean graffiti, and advocate for needle and trash pickup.
Most of the work Portland Downtown does to promote the area businesses is events. They are responsible for the holiday lights we see around the city and parks. This is the largest initiative of the group. Other events that the group sponsor include a Valentine Day card program, closing streets in the summer, painting crosswalks and other structures to create a “details to delights” effect, and the Monument Square Tree lighting and associated activities. Anything the group can do to bring folks downtown to sustain their interest in the shops and restaurants is the goal.
Cary wrapped up his presentation talking about parking. He pointed out that there is plenty of parking spaces in the downtown area, but one of the problems is that much of it is controlled by a private vendor who uses surge pricing and that is beyond the control of the city and the group. Cary encouraged members to use the public parking lots to avoid price surprises. The group is looking at options to provide busing around the downtown, similar to the current effort with the cruise ships as a way to improve the parking experience. It was great to hear from Cary and to learn that there is a group focusing on continuing a vibrant partnership between the City and downtown businesses to keep Portland the fun city it is.
