This Week's Speakers: Mark Lee & Lisa Sawin - Harriman Architects- $64 Million Portland Schools Renovation Update
The voters of Portland approved a $64M bond to address deficiencies in 4 of its elementary schools in 2017. Portland Public Schools retained Harriman, an architecture and engineering, as their partner on the design. A major effort was funding equitably across the schools, aligning the quality of the learning environments with current teaching practices, and addressing building deficiencies and code requirements. This presentation will highlight important steps in the process, discuss educational design strategies, and share before and after images of the four schools.

Mark Lee has experience in both structural engineering and architectural design, encompassing over 25 years and providing him with a truly multidisciplinary perspective on building designs. Over the years, Mark has gained significant design experience on a variety of education projects. Projects have included new construction, additions, and renovations to existing facilities, as well as master plans and space/programming studies. Before joining Harriman as an architectural designer, Mark was a structural engineering designer in Philadelphia and New York. In addition to working on projects with the Greater Philadelphia Transportation Authority, he has also worked on projects built in Indonesia and China. Mark has bachelor’s degrees in both civil engineering and architectural engineering, as well as a master’s degree in architecture.

Lisa Sawin is a principal and senior architect in Harriman’s PK-12 Education Studio. Her design philosophy is rooted in a belief that sustainable design is synonymous with good design. Her experience as a teacher, builder, and architect, coupled with her passion for developing inspiring learning environments, allows her to facilitate a collaborative process between all stakeholders resulting in meaningful design solutions. Lisa is a mother to two young children who reinforce that the world is seen differently through the eyes of a child. She holds both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Architecture from Norwich University.
Last Week's Social - Rotarians Ice The Puck At Mariners Game | By Tom Talbott and Jake Bourdeau
Portland Rotary celebrated winter with a visit to the Cross Insurance Arena, home of Maine Mariners hockey. Prior to the game, a mix of Portland Rotarians and prospects, family members, and friends put on the blades and had a recreational skate. 22 skaters in all; some mixed it up in a "pond hockey fashion", others worked on their figure 8's. A few notable tumbles, but all smiles. Next stop - Stars and Stripes Brewery one block away for post-pond analysis. Over 30+ attendees enjoyed drinks and pizza in a cozy setting with views of the Arena, then it was back to the rink to watch the Mariners take on the Reading Royals! With mid-ice seating our troupe fit right into the "Country Night" theme with our flannel shirts, including one pair of ostrich skin boots! Several Rotarians, notably Larry Gross (R) were hoping to be scouted and called up after the Mariners 5-2 loss. Thanks to Jake Bourdeau, who organized the outing which sold over 40 tickets. While not a fundraiser, we had a profit of $145 that was donated to the Milestone Recovery Center. We sent a check - ha!

District Mid-Year: Members of the Portland Club attended the District’s annual Mid-Year event at the Hilton Garden Inn in Freeport on Sunday, January 21. With District Governor-Elect Bob MacKenzie hosting the luncheon, it was an excellent and engaging program. District Governor Marion Cheney introduced keynote speaker, Kiley Wilkens-O'Brien, member of the South Portland/Cape Elizabeth Club, who is the District Chair of our new Rotary Mental Health Action Group.  She delivered an inspiring message about how Rotarians can get involved and support mental health education and prevention. Rotary Theme 2024-2025 Announced!
At Sunday's mid-year Brunch, DGE Bob MacKenzie, having just recently returned from the International Assembly, was excited to  unveil the RI theme for the 2024-2025 Rotary year: The Magic of Rotary. Rotary International President-elect Stephanie Urchick, a member of the Rotary Club of McMurray, PA, said she saw the magic of Rotary on display when she was helping install water filters in the Dominican Republic. Two boys were watching as dirty water entered the filter, then ran out clean at the other end. “One of the boys grabbed my sleeve and said, ‘Show me the magic again,’” she said. “Obviously, the water filter wasn’t magic. We worked hard to transport those filters, install them, and work with community leaders in the area to maintain them. But those boys knew that easy access to clean water would change their lives. Knowing that I played a small part in that certainly changed my life.”

Speak Up: District 7780 is beginning planning for the 2024 Recovery Conference to be held in the Fall. This event has proven to be informative and helpful as the district continues to address substance use disorder.  In an effort to obtain ideas and feedback from Rotarians, the district is asking club members to complete a survey. Access the survey with this LINK - Click Here.
